Wake ‘n Break Sessions

The Wake ‘N Break sessions is an idea I came up with in order to work on two things: making sure that I get behind my drums every single day and working on my creativity by forcing me to consistently come up with something new. The concept is simple: wake up, get behind the set, and come up with a drum break that I’m happy with.

Since there are way too many vids in the series to post on this page, you can find all of the Wake ‘n Break sessions here. Enjoy with your morning coughee! 😉

NOTE: “Wake ‘N Break Volume 1: 30 Drum Grooves To Start Your Day”, is now available for purchase at both Amazon and Smashwords! It covers the first thirty grooves in the Wake ‘N Break video series and includes notation, in depth explanations, and live links to the corresponding youtube videos. I can’t tell you how stoked I am about this series and I hope the enthusiasm carries over to the readers!

Wake ‘N Break No. 385 – Four On The Floor With A Broken Swing

Hey, guys and gals! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is a somewhat shuffled four on the floor groove and is a two phrase. In the first bar, the hi-hat pattern is “1 & a 2 & a 3 & a 4 &a”, but in the second bar, the hi-hat pattern is a measure of sixteenth notes with a bit of a broken swing feel. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the last of the weekend!

Wake ‘N Break No. 384 – Busy And Shuffled Halftime Groove

Hey folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is a busy 16th note half time groove that is broken up between the hi-hat, snare, and bass drum. The bass drum pattern actually lends a bit of a staggered feel to the groove and the ghost notes funkify it up a bit. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the weekend!

Wake ‘N Break No. 383 – Drum ‘N Face Groove

Hey folks! :) For today’s wake ‘n break, I decided to keep playing around with incorporating vocals into grooves. In this one, I decided to play a drum ‘n bass break while imitating a “bass wobble” (commonly heard in drum ‘n bass, dub step, and several other styles) with my mouth. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the upcoming weekend!

Wake ‘N Break No. 382 – Funk On Witch ‘Yo Bad Self!

Hey folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is a simple and standard two bar funk groove, but what makes the break fun is a short vocal “sample” happening at the end of the second bar. I’ve been playing around with incorporating vocals into drum breaks in different ways, so there are more to come! As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Wake ‘N Break No. 381 – 3/4 Ride Groove With Ghosted Crescendo

Happy hump day, folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is a 3/4 groove with a slight tinge of slinkiness to the sixteenth note ride pattern. There is also a ghosted crescendo on the snare, starting on the “and” of 2 and spanning across the “a” of 2, on the 3, the “e” of 3, and finally the “and” of 3. As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there. We’re already halfway through the workweek!

Wake ‘N Break No. 380 – Lights Out! (Recording Fail)

Well folks, today’s wake ‘n break is definitely unique to say the least. :) I was recording this morning’s session when my entire block lost power due to high winds. Hence, today’s recording session was ended in an abrupt fashion. At least you can see one or two of the ideas I was going for before the big moment. Hopefully you get a laugh from it and as always, much love!

Wake ‘N Break No. 379 – Super Simple, Open, And Raw With A Triplet

Hey folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is an extremely simple and open groove that packs some rawness into it. The bass drum falls on the 1 and the “and” of 1, while the hi-hats are playing a steady eighth note pulse. Finally, what gives the groove a little bit of a stagger is a triplet figure on the snare drum, starting on 3 and ending on 4. As always, I hope you dig it and here’s to everyone’s week kicking off on the good foot!

Wake ‘N Break No. 378 – Bell Groove You Can Shake A Stick At

Hey folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is an extremely simple boom bap beat, but what makes it special is the use of two Noah bells attached to the stick in my right hand. The pattern on the Noah bells is played by simply shaking the stick on “and a 2” “and a 3” “and a 4”. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the last day of the weekend!

Wake ‘N Break No. 376 – Two Bar Linear March-esque Groove

Hey folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is a two bar linear groove that reminds me a little of the drum intro to “Sunday, Bloody Sunday” by U2. In this particular groove, the bass drum is being played on all of the downbeats as well as on the “e”s, giving it a tad of a marching feel. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy your weekend!

We’re already halfway through the workweek!

Wake ‘N Break No. 371 – Big Hats And Big Boom Baps

Hey guys and gals! :) Since I used my 5.5″ fly hats in yesterday’s wake ‘n break, I decided to break out my 16″ Hell Hats today for some opposite action. This groove is a two bar phrase and it has a bit of start/stop thing happening. As for the hi-hats, they’re being barked on the “e’s” and “a’s” of 1 and 3, with the final set of barks being played on the inverted cup of the top Hell Hat. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the last of your weekend!

Wake ‘N Break No. 370 – Tiny Hi-Hat Boom Bap With A 16th Note Triplet

Hey folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is a four bar boom bap groove that has a somewhat broken and dirty swing on the hi-hat, as well as a single handed 16th note triplet on the 1 of each bar. Instead of my usual hi-hats, I decided to break out my 5.5″ fly hats for a brighter sound and more of a cutting tone. As always, I hope you dig it and much love!

Wake ‘N Break No. 369 – Eight Bar Call And Response With Tom Ostinato

Hey folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is an eight bar phrase with some call and response action going on between the first four bars and the last four bars. In the first bar, only a backbeat is played on the cross stick and the hi-hats “chick”. In the second half, however, the cross stick happens every quarter note and the hi-hats “splash”. All the while, there is an ostinato being played on the high tom. As always, I hope you dig it and have a great weekend!

Wake ‘N Break No. 365 – One Year And Three Time Signatures

Well folks, today is a special day because it marks the 365th wake ‘n break in a row. :) That’s right, it’s been one straight year of wake ‘n breaks with absolutely no days off and in celebration, I decided to come up with a groove that is made up of three different time signatures. The first bar is in 3/4, followed by a bar of 6, and then finally a bar of 5. Thanks so much to everyone who has been showing their support and much love to each and every one of you.

Wake ‘N Break No. 364 – Backbeat With 16th Notes In The Cracks

Hey folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is a somewhat straight forward backbeat that has a tinge of second line drumming and a touch of cowbell. As always, I hope you dig it and enjoy the last of the weekend!

As always, I hope you dig it and hang in there. Once again, we’re already halfway through the workweek!

Happy hump day, folks! :) Today’s wake ‘n break is a basic backbeat, but it that has a slight “stop and go” feel to it, as well as a very simple tom rhythm. I was listening to “Let’s Dance Let’s Shout” by the Jackson 5 and was inspired to try and throw some toms into a simple backbeat, but more trashy a “stop and go” feel. Please note that this groove is in no way, shape, or form a variation on the groove to “Lets Dance Let’s Shout”. I was just inspired by listening to the song.
